Biography

Born in Santiniketan in 1940, Chameli Ramachandran studied at Kala Bhavana under Benode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij. She completed a diploma in Fine Arts and Crafts in 1960 and later earned an MA in Ancient Indian History and Culture from Visva-Bharati in 1966.

Gallery sources place her life and work in New Delhi historically, and her practice has long been attentive to nature. In the early 1990s she took up Chinese ink and brush, developing that language into a signature approach. Her paintings often combine ink with restrained touches of colour, including gold and silver. She also co-created children's picture books with her husband, artist A. Ramachandran.

Selected Exhibitions

Her first one-person show was held in 1993. Selected documented exhibitions include In the Silence of the Soul, Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi (2005); A Confluence of Distilled Essences, Grosvenor Vadehra, London (2008); Water & Earth Trans-Formations, Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi (2012); Enchanted Garden, Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi (2022); and Offering, Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi (2024).
