Paritosh Sen

Paritosh Sen (1918–2008) was a painter, illustrator, teacher and writer, and a founding member of the Calcutta Group. Born in Dhaka, he helped bring modernist approaches into Indian art through a practice attentive to everyday life, character and social change.

Biography

Sen studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras before moving to Calcutta, where the Calcutta Group was founded in 1942. In 1949 he went to Paris for further study, including at the École des Beaux-Arts. After returning to India in 1954, he taught and continued to paint, draw, illustrate and write. His work often uses caricature and closely observed figures to examine social life.

He also wrote Zindabahar, autobiographical sketches recalling his childhood in Dhaka.
