Born in 1933, Prokash Karmakar trained initially with his father, Prahlad Karmakar. He began his art education at Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta, but left because of financial hardship. After army service, he returned to painting and developed a distinct practice shaped by vivid landscapes and nudes, marked by bold lines and rich textures.
The work is often noted for its directness and painterly force rather than spectacle. The emphasis stays on form, surface, and atmosphere.
