Biography

From Burugupalli to the studio

Born in 1942 in Burugupalli, in present-day Telangana, Thota Vaikuntam enrolled at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture in Hyderabad in 1960. He completed a diploma in painting and later studied painting and printmaking with K. G. Subramanyan. For fifteen years he taught at Jawahar Bal Bhavan in Hyderabad while also working in cinema as an art director.

His practice moved from charcoal and conté on paper to the vivid acrylic paintings for which he is widely recognised, and more recently to bronze sculpture. Rural Telangana and its people remain central to his imagery; women and mother figures recur as a tribute to his mother, Satyamma, and to the strength of the women he knew.
