The artist
Biography
Born in 1969 in Chakradharpur, Jharkhand, Ajay Chakradhar studied commerce and developed as a self-taught artist. After beginning his career in Delhi, he moved to Mumbai in 1999 and has practised art full time for more than 25 years.
His paintings combine paint with ground and powdered minerals, building tactile surfaces in which earthy colour, abrasion and energetic gesture meet. In 2022, he became the first Indian resident at the Alice Boner Institute in Varanasi.
